Voyage to the mecca.
A Howard Tour for howard hopefuls by howard grads.
“Howard University changed my life.”- Lila Mae Owens
Growing up in East Oakland the world can feel small. My Junior year in high school I was encouraged by board member Dr. Grace Carroll to consider Howard University as opposed to staying local to attend college. I applied and was accepted. Attending Howard was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was exposed to a rich heritage and tradition of HBCU life and I developed a wonderful network of lifetime friendships and colleagues who positively influenced my life. I want others to share this experience. Particularly Bay Area high school students who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to visit or attend and HBCU.
Voyage to the Mecca is a college tour of Howard University during Homecoming week, October 2019. The Lila Mae Foundation will provide round trip travel, ground transportation, lodging and tickets to all events.
A small group Howard hopefuls will tour along side Howard alumni on an in-depth, fun-filled, educational tour of the university. The tour will also include the National African American Museum, Homecoming Step Show, Yard Fest and more. Our goal is to expose aspiring Howard students from Oakland to the rich experience of Howard University.
